Katharine Nelson, MCC, has been providing career development and career counseling services for individuals and organizations for over 30 years. During 23 of those years, she worked at the University of Washington as a career counselor for graduate and undergraduate students, UW departments, and student and staff organizations, while simultaneously maintaining a career-focused private practice.
In addition, Ms. Nelson taught in the UW Career Development Certificate Program for several years, earning the prestigious Award for Teaching Excellence in 2001. She is a Master Career Counselor, granted by the National Career Development Association (one of two MCC's in Washington state). This certification, obtained through the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC), requires demonstrating related work experience, satisfying course prerequisites, and completing a national exam process. She is also a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.
Ms. Nelson has worked in a number of educational and business settings, working with individuals and organizations on career issues such as choosing a career, refining a career, or re-directing a career.
Ms. Nelson has an interest in the relationship between one's career and self-esteem, and has conducted research which supports the importance of self-esteem in choosing and performing well in a career.
Her background as a mental health professional enables Ms. Nelson to assure confidentiality and confidence in exploring both the personal and professional issues inherent in career counseling. As a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, she adheres to the ethical standards of the American Counseling Association and safeguards client information in accordance with the most recent Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations.
